What is the MWHL?
The Mountain Women's Hockey League was set up by Ginny Crowley to help promote and develop women's hockey in Eagle County. It has grown from 50 women to 90+ participants. Beginning in October, clinics are held to teach and/or review hockey skills and determine the ability level of each hockey player.

What happens at the Training Camps / Clinics?
During the training camps there are clinics for beginning players which focus on skating, stick handling, shooting, game positioning and basic game rules, or clinics for intermediate/advanced skaters which focus on speed, advanced stick handling, shooting and team leadership skills. There are approximately 6 clinics before the league starts. Cost is about $15 per clinic.
You do not need to attend clinics to play in the MWHL.

Who plays in our league?
The MWHL is made up approximately 90 women from Eagle County. For some women this is their first time playing ice hockey, while others have been with the program for 5+ years. Participants ages range from 18 to 60+. You do not need to live in Eagle County to be a member of the MWHL.

Where do we play ice hockey?
Eagle Ice Arena and Dobson Vail Ice Arena.

When do we play?
Beginner and Intermediate/Advanced Training Camp runs from October - November. Teams are drafted by mid November. Each team is allocated a couple of team practices before league play starts in Dec / Jan. The league runs until the end of March. Practices and games occur on Sunday evening with the occasional Saturday evening game/practice.

How does this league work?
6 teams are created using a draft system to ensure a balanced ability level on each roster. Teams contain 13-18 players depending on the registration numbers. Each team has two captains and a coach. Teams play each other twice during the season for a total of 10 games. Additional games occur during the Championship Tournament.

What equipment do I need?
You need full hockey gear, there is some rental equipment available through the Eagle Rink. Jerseys will be provided for each team and remain the property of the MWHL.

How much does it cost?
Approximately $200 for the league which includes 2-3 practice sessions, 10 season games with referees and end of season tournament games. Each player also pays a $30 league fee which pays for the end-of-season party, thank you gifts to coaches, trophies and awards, and miscellaneous league expenses. An additional $25 check is collected and held (not cashed) as a jersey deposit and returned at the end of each season when jerseys are collected. Clinics are about $15 a session.

End of Season Tournament
Teams are seeded according to their standings after the regular league ends. A Championship Tournament will be held at the end of the season . Traveling trophies for the teams winning the Championship Tournament, Best League Record and Sportsmanship as well as individual player recognitions will be awarded at the end-of-season party!

End of Season Party
Simply not to be missed!

How does the draft work?
Captains and coaches meet after the training clinics end to select each team's players. A core of five players from the previous season's team provides continuity. You must have played on the team in the last two years to be eligible for the core. Teams choose based on the position they finished in the regular season the previous year. Last place team gets the first choice in draft the following year. All players who are registered by the deadline set by WECMRD will be drafted by a team.

Can I score as many goals as I like?
Each individual can only score 3 goals per game.

Are slapshots allowed?
No shot where the stick is raised above the waist is permitted.
